sommy time 0

Jan26

It’s that time of year again, and every year I seem to get some kind of nomination in the sommies (Spokane’s local music awards). Named after the person that started them, Som (Isamu) Jordan. Som used to write for a weekend paper called Spokane 7 that unfortunately went under a while back. They did a lot of coverage on local bands, live podcasts and such. Som started his own thing at www.thesomshow.com and still shows strong commitment to promoting good music in Spokane. I appreciate him a lot! He is relentless and doesn’t show much favoritism in a small city where it can be easy to just promote your friends.

So, this is just a friendly reminder to vote for the Sommies!! http://thesomshow.com/som/ballet

more on krochet kids 0

In just a few days I’m putting on this benefit show for Krochet Kids. I’m really excited to be able to help them and spread the word about what they are doing. I believe in this project so deeply and have seen it’s growth and impact as it’s developed. I’m so proud to have been observing and helping as these amazing people have used their gifts to serve others.

More and more it becomes overwhelming as we watch the news and hear about tragedy striking all over the world through poverty, corruption and war. There’s so many different countries in need, even our own. So many wounded people…spiritually, emotional, physically. Often I feel immobilized, never sure of how I can invest or help. Especially being a poor musician not having much expendable income to donate to charities.

Then I realized that I have a platform. People listen to me! Or sometimes at least. I have the chance, every night I play at a bar, club or coffee shop to stand in front of a microphone and use my voice. Not many people get to do that.

Using my place in this small circle of the underground live music industry I have felt naturally led to help Krochet Kids. You know when you see those ads on TV with the bearded white man holding the little emaciated orphans and you wonder if you gave money where it would actually go? Would it really feed that orphan? Well, Krochet Kids is one organization I don’t have to worry about when I give them my money and support.

I haven’t met these ladies, but one of the hats they made sits on my head. And when my good friend Leah, who spent last summer working with them in Africa tells me stories about them getting to send their kids to school for the first time because of KKI, I believe her! Not only do I believe her, but I get really excited.

I hope you can get excited with me. This stuff is real and no one is making money off it, in fact pretty much everyone who even works for Krochet Kids has a second job working at a restaurant! Please join me in supporting them on Wednesday at the Service Station at 8pm. Bring your friends or just tell your friends, even if you can’t come yourself.

tour update and facebook 0

Oct31

I made a facebook fan page, yep. Supposedly it’s the thing to do lately because everyone has forgot the login info to their myspace pages and don’t care if they find it. Facebook seems nice and all, I’ve had one for a while. You can find random pictures of yourself that friends post and the ads aren’t quite as stupid and bombarding. But on the artistic side it makes me kind of annoyed. You can’t do anything cool with it at all. I still get a kick out of pimping out my own myspace page. Unfortunately, less and less people even notice when I do. I don’t blame them, I don’t spend as much time looking at people’s myspace pages either. Ahhh the bonds of being tied to the waves of pop-internet culture.

Anyways, I made a fan page on facebook. So, if you have one, check it out to keep updated on tours and recordings and such if you don’t use myspace anymore. Just click the little “f” link on the right sidebar.

In other news, my san fran show got cancelled and rescheduled. It will now be on November 23rd at EL Rio.
