Luke’s Bomb Garden this week! 0

The Cycle – by Luke Baumgarten (taken from www.inlander.com)

It’s easy to compartmentalize the parts of a music career. The steps involved lend themselves to it, in a sense. Composing comes first, with some local playing, then recording and, sometimes, touring. Writing requires imagination and creativity. Recording requires that plus money. Touring requires that plus money plus marketing and booking and promotion — a transition that leads away from the art of the thing and toward the business of it. For a lot of artists I’ve talked to, the business end feels a little unseemly, and also difficult, and — given the number of tours that lose money (most of them) — a little like bad business.

One local artist, though, has found inspiration in all of it.

At the end of June, Karli Fairbanks moved out of her house, quit her job and took off on tour. Then she went and squatted in Portland for a few weeks, making friends and fans, doing some networking. Then she came home to write a new album. Then she went to Seattle to record it. This week, she heads out on tour again. The whole process — the travel, the good shows, the bad shows — has fed her art.

Her advice for breaking into strange towns includes “learning how to tap into communities that already exist instead of trying to create one around your show,” she says.

“The music is the foundation,” she says. Then it’s a matter of knowing your people: “Musicians and audiences — finding them, getting to open for them, or getting them to your shows and then maintaining [a] relationship and connection with them so they remember you.”

Though it’s paying dividends for her as a brand, it’s doing just as much for her song craft. Touring and networking, she says, “just opens your perspective on life and music.”

Fairbanks begins her 14-stop, 16-day tour — including six gigs with Nick Jaina — on Saturday in Tacoma. She’s back in Spokane playing Empyrean on Nov. 22.

Thanks Luke!

November Tour – Week #1 details 2

Oct24

My November tour starts next week and I’m getting really excited. I wanted to share a few details about the shows for the first week of tour.

November 1st – Tacoma, WA – Pacific Lutheran University – 9pm – FREE
This is the very first show of 6 shows I have booked with Nick Jaina. We are playing in the CAVE which is an event space on campus. I know absolutely no one who goes to PLU, so if you do…maybe give them a shout and tell them to come down. If you live in Tacoma, but don’t go to school there, you can still come and it’s free!

November 2nd – Seattle, WA – Sunset Tavern – 9pm – 6$
This will be my 2nd time playing at the Sunset Tavern in Seattle. It’s a great bar in Ballard that was really fun to play at last time. Nick and the Beautiful Clarks will both be playing sets also.

November 4th – Puyallup, WA – Caffe Adamo – 7pm – FREE
Supposedly all of Puyallup is a strip mall, and that’s exactly what Caffe Adamo is right in the middle of. Fortunately, it’s a great place for music and nice people and really good coffee. Noah Gundersen and some conglomeration of his awesome band, the Courage will be playing this night also.

November 5th – Centralia, WA – Santa Lucia – 7pm – FREE
Noah’s hometown is Centralia and the very first time I played there was when I met him. It was a really horrible show, but opened the door to sweet friendship between Noah, his sister Abbey and I. This summer I bought my new electric guitar and played it for the first time at Santa Lucia, so we have a special bond. Always look forward to playing in Centralia now.

November 6th – Sisters, OR – Artworks – 7pm – $5 students $10 adults
Sisters, Oregon holds a big folk festival every year that I hear is pretty excellent and I guess they maintain a great community of music throughout the year. This will be the last show with Nick Jaina for this tour. Noah kindly worked this show out for us and will be playing too!

November 7th – Modesto, CA – Cafe Deva – 8pm – $5
I had a chance to play in Modesto on my tour in the spring and had such a great time. It was definitely one of my favorite shows. Everyone there is very excited about music and promoting shows well. A lot of small towns could take a few hints from the folks at Off the Air in how to put on great events. They always have well designed posters, well thought through bills and they work really hard to get good musicians coming through town. I was really excited to get on this show with Chris Robley from Portland and my friends in Not and Airplane.

So, that will be the first week of the tour. There’s still a chance that Noah, Nick and I will all go up to Bellingham for a house show on the 3rd…but have yet to find a house. If anyone has any ideas, feel free to let us know. We really love bellingham, just haven’t been able to find a place to play.

One last thing, my dear friend Shannon will be joining me on tour filling in as many tasks as I can throw her way. So far she’s up to, merch girl, band member (on accordion, glockenspeil and harmonies), tour bus driver, roadie, guitar tech, publicist, and maybe I can get her to do my hair every day for me. We’ll see how it all works out. We are both very excited for these shows and hope you all we be greeting us in your various little sections of the west coast!
