elkfest!!! 2

May29

Corn Pasta, summer beers, hot sun, kids and crazy folks dancing around, seeing lots of friends and not to mention a whole heck of a lot of good music.

Elkfest continually succeeds to be Spokane’s best independant music outdoor festival, or festival of any kind for that matter. The lineup looks great this year of you ask me, [minus the fact that I'm not playing (; ]. Today I’m heading out to see my brother’s band, the Booze Fighters play and hopefully catch some of the Globes later on. Best part is, it’s free.

As far as Saturday highlights go, Kaylee Cole has a fun new band setup she’s rolling out tomorrow for the first time and the Maldives are back in town. Sunday, my favorite band from Seattle, Pickwick will be playing and also one of the best bands to dance to, Vellella Vellella (or however you spell it) will be performing. Fun times at the Elk! See ya’ll there.

To finish off a great weekend of music I’m playing a show with Laura Gibson and Musee Mecanique on Monday evening at Empyrean. So, load up on corn Pasta and rock n’ Roll this weekend so that come Monday you will be ready for a glass of wine and some indie folk glory to ease you into another work week.

My day today has consisted of a nice diner breakfast, frisbee with my little brother, family ice cream outing, sitting in the yard reading, cleaning, doing laundry, listening to M83 while wishing I had a ticket to sasquatch tomorrow. I sat on the patio at Empyrean yesterday for the first time this season with Zac and Pablo Trucker discussing life as musicians. Much needed conversation over the topics I’ve been ranting over in my posts. Not only has the vitamin D done wonders for my soul, but so has the fresh air. It’s something I say every year and will continue to repeat till I move; Spokane is the most wonderful place to live come early summer, through fall. It’s so beautiful, colorful and full of life.

I’m heading down to Kennewick on Monday to see Death Vessel, an amazing band from Rhode Island, and my dear friend Kaylee Cole. Death Vessel is playing at Sasquatch today. I found out about them from Caleb (drummer in my band/booker at the red room), when he booked them to play. Since then I have really fallen for their lovely tunes and am really excited to see them live.

Next day I’m heading down to Portland to play at Mississippi Studios. I had a chance to play there over a year ago with Nick Jaina and since then it has been remodeled and looks and feels very different. Interested to see what it’s like playing there. Tickets are a little steeper than most of the shows that I play ($10), but I imagine the headliner should be pretty good. Keri Noble is the lady playing the main set of the show. I guess Kelly Clarkson has covered one of her songs? Haven’t listened to much of her stuff, but she seems like a pretty talented piano driven pop artist. After seeing Taylor Swift recently I’m kind of digging/admiring some of the talent that goes into being successful in pop music. It’s not an easy gig, in ways that are completely opposite challenges than what I do with music.

In other news, Crunk Roost has undergone some changes recently and will now just be a Monthly publication. Phew! I was really wearing thin with the twice a month thing. So much work. Hopefully this monthly thing will be more managable. The next issue will be released on June 10th with a release party at the Baby Bar. Mark your calendars! The Crunk Roost Website and Myspace are getting some facelifts and will be updated more frequently thanks to some new volunteers. And we’ve joined twitter. (: It just seemed right.
