eight year olds and broccoli 3

Sep22

I’m getting really excited for this fall. On top of my east coast trip, I’ll be going on another full band tour in November down the West Coast. Kory Kruckenberg who recorded and produced my newest album will be playing bass, my brother Zac Fairbanks will be on lead guitar and Caleb Ingersoll on the drums. I’m really excited about the lineup and just hanging out with three of my favorite friends for two weeks. Booking for the tour is going a little sub par and as most of you have gathered, from one of my previous posts, I’m having some trouble booking shows in the Bay area. Trying to book shows in San Francisco is like trying to convince a my 3rd grade brother that broccoli tastes good. It doesn’t seem to work. Broccoli may or may not be good, it’s completely subjective. But he’s never tried it, and he won’t.

You would think that I appeal to bookers more than broccoli appeals to an eight year old, but like I said, these things are subjective.

The point of this blog post is kind of similar to one of those annoying pleas that rock bands put out on myspace bulletins when they are trying to book a tour. Hopefully, it’s a little more classy and less desperate. Caleb reminded me today that booking shows when you are desperate to fill your calender on a tour always turn out bad anyways, so you might as well have a day off. I learned that lesson too well on our spring tour.

I’ve already sent out about fifty emails to different bands and venues, so I may have already tried your suggestion…but it would still be so nice to try a few more places before we really run out of time. Thanks for your help and support!

Another exciting fact about the November tour is that it will not only be in promotion of my full length album, but also a brand new EP that I’m releasing as charity for Krochet Kids International. Details aren’t completely worked out, but the EP profits will go completely to Krochet Kids. More info on Krochet Kids and the EP will be coming very soon! www.krochetkids.org

last.fm 1

Do any of you realize how cool last.fm is? It’s so cool. My favorite channel lately is myself. I know that sounds weird…but think about it? It’s all music that I like that isn’t me! Any time a song of mine comes on I can just skip it.

Just a recent awesome realization I’ve had lately. Try it for yourself.

While waiting for a reply from my letter to San Francisco, I have been working on lots of new songs. Over the past several years my routine of writing has gotten more and more steady. Dillema’s come and go with different masks over the face of insecurity and actual musical or artistic ineptness. Still, something always seems to motivate me to continue to write. Lately, it’s been the challenge to write some bluegrassy songs. On my trip to Boston, I’m hanging out with a good friend, Kimber Ludiker who is an incredible fiddle player and musician in general. We are doing some gigs together and will be working out some collaborative material to play while I’m around. I’m pretty excited about the challenge and it definitely has been a challenge so far. I have somehow naturally and subconsciously developed a habit of writing really smooth, laid back melodies. It’s not that my voice can’t do other things, I just somehow can’t make other things up. These are the conundrums that move me forward.

In the habit of laid back folk songs, which I have nothing against, I have been writing some of those too. Recently, I have found myself entranced by what I like to think of as the flowery poets of the 1800’s. A more traditional title would be romantic or lyrical poets like Keats, Dickinson, Wordsworth and Shelley.  Really pretty, rhyming, intricate imagery filled poems. They bring so many pictures to my eyes and such a distinct, fascinating style of beauty. I’ve been working on incorporating some of that inspiration into my writing. Making the word pictures more distinct, cryptically built, pretty and romantic. I have a new goal of a whole album of songs written with that philosophy.

I’d love to hear from any writers or artists what is recently sparking your artistic starters?
